Former NFL cornerback Ross Weaver, who played for the Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, New York Giants, and Arizona Cardinals, has found a new passion in personal training. After wrapping up his football career in 2016, Ross pursued his personal trainer certification through the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA), a move facilitated by a partnership with the NFL Players Association (NFLPA).
Ross first learned about ISSA through the NFLPA, which offers former players resources for career transitions. "I discovered ISSA last year through the NFLPA," he said. "They provide discounts for former athletes interested in becoming trainers, and I thought, why not give it a try?"
Ross emphasized the comprehensive nature of ISSA's training approach compared to his previous experiences. "I absolutely love ISSA's tests and the way the study material is broken down," he shared. "Unlike other certifications, ISSA wants us to really know what we are doing instead of just passing tests. The quizzes and case scenarios helped me understand the material deeply, which is crucial when training athletes safely."
Ross's passion for fitness and well-being has driven his journey. "My fitness is a huge part of my well-being," he said. "Like most people, I have times when I fall away from my goals, but having the ISSA knowledge to get me back on track is awesome."
Ross has completed several ISSA courses, including:
In addition to his career as a professional athlete, Ross works full-time as an engineer. This background in engineering has provided him with a unique perspective on fitness training. Engineering is all about precision, problem-solving, and understanding how different systems work together—skills that translate seamlessly into personal training. Ross's methodical approach to training, focusing on the correct execution of exercises, helps his clients achieve their goals safely and effectively.
Ross's experience as a professional football player gives him a significant advantage in coaching young athletes. He understands the physical and mental demands of high-level sports and uses this knowledge to tailor his training programs. His firsthand experience with the rigors of professional sports allows him to empathize with his clients, pushing them to reach their full potential while emphasizing injury prevention.
Ross enjoys training young athletes and emphasizes the importance of doing exercises correctly. "I drill patience within the drills," he explained. "When you do random stuff, you're going to get 'random-stuff' results. Understanding the science behind exercises is key to avoiding injuries and enhancing performance."
Looking ahead, Ross aims to expand his expertise. "I might want to get more into nutrition or speed specialization," he mentioned. "Helping athletes understand how to train effectively and efficiently is a rewarding part of my journey."
Ross's experience with ISSA has not only equipped him with the skills to train others but also reignited his passion for fitness, proving that the right knowledge can lead to meaningful change.
By leveraging his engineering background and professional athletic experience, Ross Weaver has crafted a unique playbook for success in personal training. His journey underscores the importance of comprehensive education and the value of experience in shaping effective fitness coaches.
