As a personal trainer or fitness professional, you're dedicated to helping clients achieve their health and fitness goals. But what if there was a way to take your expertise to the next level? Enter Functional Nutrition – a game-changing approach that can revolutionize how you work with clients, especially those dealing with chronic pain or unresolved health issues.

Introducing Andrea Nakayama and the Functional Nutrition Alliance

Meet Andrea Nakayama, founder of the Functional Nutrition Alliance (FxNA). Andrea's journey into Functional Nutrition began with a personal tragedy that exposed the gaps in our current healthcare system. In April 2000, her late husband was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor when she was just seven weeks pregnant. This experience opened her eyes to the power of dietary and lifestyle modifications in supporting health and healing, even in the most grave circumstances.

Andrea explains, "My passion is understanding the terrain, the body's terrain, in which signs, symptoms, and diagnoses manifest. It's not my job to deal with what I call the “branch on the tree”, the diagnosis itself. Instead, it's my job to understand functionally how we actually nourish or impact the soil that's allowing for that cancer, that diabetes, that heart disease, that autoimmunity, those chronic health concerns to manifest."

What Is Functional Nutrition?

Functional Nutrition goes beyond simplistic "good food, bad food" categorizations. Instead, it looks at how food interacts with an individual's unique body. As Andrea puts it, "in Functional Nutrition, we're not saying: coffee, it’s good or bad for you.” We consider what's true in your digestive system, your immune system, your genetic makeup to understand where food (or coffee, in this example) meets your physiology. This is different from anchoring on some idea of the food outside of your body. Whereas nutrition science looks at the risk or reward of the food itself, Functional Nutrition looks at where food meets physiology."

The Functional Nutrition philosophy is based on three key principles:

  1. Systems biology: Everything in the body is connected.

  2. Bio-individuality: We are all unique.

  3. Holistic approach: All things matter – diet, sleep, stress, relationships, and more.

How Functional Nutrition Can Elevate Your Training Practice

As a fitness professional, you're already helping clients improve their health through exercise. But imagine being able to address the root causes of their health issues, enhance their performance, and prevent future problems. That's where Functional Nutrition comes in.

Andrea emphasizes, "Functional Nutrition is about growth, metabolism, and repair. This aligns with what we need to do when we're in the fitness realm."

By incorporating Functional Nutrition principles into your practice, you can:

  1. Help clients who aren't responding to traditional approaches

  2. Address underlying health issues that may be hindering fitness progress and results

  3. Provide more comprehensive, personalized care

  4. Expand your client base to include those with chronic health conditions

The Full Body Systems Course: Your Gateway to Functional Nutrition

To help fitness professionals dive into the world of Functional Nutrition, Andrea and her team at FxNA have created the Full Body Systems course. This 10-month training program covers the science and art of the Functional Nutrition practice.

"Full Body Systems is a 10-month training in the science and art of the Functional Nutrition practice," Andrea explains. "And it's very carefully curated, because there’s a lot to take in when it comes to understanding how the inner workings of the body function. We deliver content each week and provide real-time support so that your understanding and knowledge continue to build, allowing you to shift your practice from the very start. "

The course includes:

  • Weekly lessons on different body systems and Functional Nutrition principles

  • Live Q&A sessions with Andrea and her expert nutrition team

  • An active message board for peer support and expert guidance

  • Real-world case studies to apply your learning

Success Stories: From Military to Medicine

The power of Functional Nutrition education is evident in the success stories of FxNA graduates. Take Kate, for example. Coming from a military background, she turned to Functional Nutrition to help her daughter deal with anxiety during her husband's deployments. Now, Kate not only has a thriving private practice but also volunteers at a free women's clinic, where she collaborates with medical professionals to address issues like blood sugar imbalances and hormone disorders.

Another inspiring graduate is Vaish Sarathy, who used her Functional Nutrition training to help her son with autism and Down syndrome. Andrea shares, "She's been able to take her training and look at kids on the spectrum and how we use Functional Nutrition training to be able to help children perform at their highest level of performance."

Bridging the Gap in Healthcare

One of the most exciting aspects of Functional Nutrition is its ability to complement traditional medical care. Andrea notes, "Medical doctors probably only get about 17 hours max of nutrition training in their healthcare training." This gap creates an opportunity for fitness professionals with Functional Nutrition training to become valuable allies in the healthcare system.

By understanding how food and lifestyle impact the inner workings of the body, you can offer insights and support that many medical professionals aren't trained to provide. As Andrea puts it, "What most of our nurse graduates say is, 'This is the patient-centered training I always wish I had gotten in nursing school, but didn't!'"
