When Jonathan Marin looked in the mirror on August 1, 2021, he saw someone he didn't recognize. At 415 pounds, he had reached his heaviest weight during the pandemic, but the reflection showed him more than just physical changes. "I realized I had become everything I never wanted to be - the person I had always worked so hard not to become," he recalls.
That moment marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey. Not only would Jonathan go on to lose 160 pounds in less than a year, but he would also transform his entire approach to life, eventually becoming a certified personal trainer through the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA).
Growing up in Washington, Jonathan had always struggled with his weight. Despite being active in sports like basketball and football, the numbers on the scale kept climbing. "I'd go to pediatricians or dieticians with my mom and they never really explained how to lose weight or how losing weight really works," he shares.
The pandemic posed additional challenges. Without access to gyms and his regular basketball routine, Jonathan’s weight increased dramatically from 312 to 415 pounds. However, as facilities began reopening, he started researching weight loss strategies and committed to making a change.
For Jonathan, now 25, the weight loss journey became about much more than numbers on a scale. "You start to realize that it's more than just weight loss, it's a lifestyle," he explains. "You can't just be someone who lost 160 pounds one day and then the next day you're back to your old habits. It's about consistency and discipline."
As a first-generation American, Jonathan also found himself reflecting on his relationship with his parents and their sacrifices. "My parents did the best they could. They're proud homeowners and they're retired. They've done remarkable things for themselves, especially for not having been born in the US."
This reflection led to personal growth beyond physical transformation. "I had to grow into the person I always wanted to be - someone who is emotionally open, communicates well and takes responsibility for their life," he shares.
As Jonathan documented his weight loss journey on social media, followers began requesting personal training services. However, his commitment to science-based methods and responsibility toward others led him to decline. "I only know what really works for me, and I don't know if that's going to work for you," he would tell them.
This dedication to evidence-based practice eventually led him to ISSA. After researching various certification programs and seeing positive reviews, even on platforms like Reddit, Jonathan enrolled in ISSA's Certified Personal Trainer program in April 2024.
He completed the certification in just 10 weeks, finding validation in the scientific foundations of the program. "The biggest thing that I loved about ISSA was soaking up the information and realizing that it aligned with what I already believed," he says. “What I was learning was accurate and grounded in science.”
Today, Jonathan works as a personal trainer at Gold's Gym in Kennewick, Washington, where he's already making a difference in clients' lives. He takes pride in providing scientifically-backed guidance, noting how rewarding it is when clients verify the information themselves. "It feels amazing when clients realize the guidance is backed by science and it works for them,” he says. “Helping someone with something you know is real and effective is incredibly rewarding.”
Not content to stop learning, Jonathan has continued his education through ISSA's Strength and Conditioning and Nutrition programs. Looking ahead four years, he dreams of owning his own gym where he can empower even more people. "The most important thing is that at the end of the day, your clients feel good about themselves and see that anything is possible."
For Jonathan, success comes from consistent small actions aligned with larger goals. "It’s about all the little things, done consistently,” he says. “Not as a punishment, but because your bigger goals outweigh your momentary desires.
