Mason Lacaillade has always been driven by two powerful forces: a passion for fitness and a desire to serve his community. As a former firefighter EMT and police officer, Mason understood firsthand the critical role that physical fitness plays in the lives of first responders. But it wasn't until he received the ISSA x REIGN scholarship in 2021 that he found a way to combine these passions into a new career path.
In August 2021, Mason's life took an exciting turn when he was selected as a recipient of the ISSA x REIGN scholarship. This opportunity opened doors he never thought possible, allowing him to pursue comprehensive fitness education while still working full-time in law enforcement.
"It was such an awesome opportunity to be selected as an ISSA x REIGN scholarship winner," Mason recalls. "At that time, I was one of our trainers for the police department, and that was a big reason I wanted to gain knowledge to share with other police officers."
The scholarship enabled Mason to embark on an intensive educational journey with ISSA. Over the course of about six months, he completed a series of certifications that would ultimately lead to becoming an ISSA Master Trainer:
Nutrition Certification
Strength and Conditioning Certification
Mason approached his studies with dedication, often waking up early to study before work and staying up late to complete coursework. "Obviously, it's not easy," he admits. "You have to have some dedication. But ultimately, if you want it, you've got to put in that extra work."
Completing the ISSA Master Trainer program had a profound impact on Mason's confidence and capabilities as a fitness professional. He explains, "Anybody who has a background in fitness has some knowledge, but how ISSA expands it is so much more. The increase in knowledge is incredible, from dieting and nutrition to understanding how our bodies need different types of training."
Mason particularly values the specialized knowledge he gained in areas like strength training and nutrition. "Knowing statistically how to target specific groups for their goals... ISSA definitely gives you that opportunity to zone in on specialties," he says.
Drawing from his background in public safety, Mason is passionate about the role fitness plays in the lives of first responders. He emphasizes the mental health benefits, explaining, "Being a first responder, you see some crazy stuff out there. It can be incredibly tough. I always used fitness as my outlet, my time to get away and reset."
For those working in physically demanding and high-stress fields like firefighting and law enforcement, Mason believes fitness is non-negotiable. "You can't go into those situations being out of shape, or else bad things are going to happen," he warns. "Having a great cardio base with strength, and knowing how to take care of our bodies to do such a physical job, is so important."
Mason's passion for fitness and law enforcement has helped him build a significant following on social media, with over 50,000 followers on Instagram. He shares workout routines and fitness tips tailored to first responders and others interested in this niche.
"Find your niche, and once you find it, just go with it," Mason advises aspiring fitness influencers. "If you're being real and who you actually are with what you're doing, people are going to gravitate to you."
While Mason currently balances his fitness pursuits with a full-time job outside the industry, he remains committed to helping others achieve their health and fitness goals. He sees his work in fitness as a fulfilling side pursuit rather than a full-time career.
"I love physical fitness, and I don't ever want to make it something that I have to do," Mason explains. "Being able to do it on the side or online is just more fulfilling for me because I don't have to do it – I do it because I really enjoy it and I actually want to help people."
Mason's thirst for knowledge hasn't diminished since completing his Master Trainer certification. He expresses interest in additional ISSA courses, particularly those focused on specialized populations like older adults or courses in yoga and flexibility training.
"Anything specializing in certain groups, maybe the elderly, always interests me," he says. "As far as stretching or yoga classes, those are things that people who are into strength and conditioning don't always prioritize, and I think that's awesome."
Through his journey from first responder to fitness leader, Mason Lacaillade exemplifies the power of education and passion combined. His story is an inspiration not only to those in public safety careers but to anyone looking to make a positive impact through fitness.
As Mason continues to grow his knowledge and share his expertise, he remains grateful for the opportunity provided by the ISSA x REIGN scholarship. It's clear that the impact of this program extends far beyond one individual, creating a ripple effect that's helping to build stronger, healthier communities, one first responder at a time.
